I think that too often we have to ask ourselves these basic questions, what is my purpose and who am I?
Purpose
We live in this world and get off focus at times. The Bible says that we are to live in this world but that we are not of this world. And that we also must not have a worldly way of thinking. We must stay focused on God’s word and His way of thinking. The evil in this world will hate us and try to distract us but this is when we must be strong in His word.
“I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil. They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth. As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world.”
John 17:14-18
This is part of Jesus’ prayer to God the night before His crucifixion. He knew what we were going to be dealing with and taught us how to deal with it. He also commissioned us to go into the world. Yes, the same one that hates you. What are we supposed to be doing out there? The same purpose Jesus was sent to this world for. Sharing God’s love. Not to spend time trying to get the world’s approval.
Who I Am
We are God’s children. And since we are God’s children we should know who God is.
“We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error. Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.”
1 John 4:6-8
God is love. As God’s children we are supposed to love one another as God has loved us. This is who we are. Not just what we are supposed to do. Love is our purpose but it is also our identity. God loves and He is love.
Conclusion:
Since we are children of God, we must strive to be like God, and God is love. We must love. Love is our purpose and our identity.
What is my purpose?
